Getting back to basics with Tassie timbers - latest lures

Postby MXB » Sun Jan 22, 2012 2:43 pm

Hi all . . .

For anybody who doesn't know I must be one of the slowest lure makers in history lol

Anyway on my recent trip to Tassie late last year I was lucky enough to be given/stumble across/salvage some nice pieces of Tasmanian timbers that were shaped in Tassie and then finished in Sydney when I got home. I know have a serious passion for King William Pine ('King Billy Pine') and some unknow cedar (that looked slightly different to KBP but smelled VERY similar) that was sourced down south with Tyenna Dave. Also some very different pieces of Huon pine that weren't too dense and easier to carve. I also decided to work on some lures specifically to use for bass, trout and estuary work in the salt instead of 'experimenting too much'!!

Image

These first lures are all through wired using 0.9 gal wire and then back filled with lead sheet - bottom one sinks and has a little squarish bib. The ones without rings and hooks (because I have lost my split ring pliers zippedsmilie ) are in colours/patterns that I know catch fish. These are all in the 3.5 - 5cm range and I have hand cut the bibs for a change.

Image

These two are my bass lures and I have used split pins for eyelets and painted in a basic pattern that looks like a small baitfish. Excellent action on these two, decal eyes and hand cut bibs. No ballast in these guys.

Image

These two were defintely a bit experimental and required serious ballast to get them to sit properly in the water - both have two small sinkers sunken into the belly to counter the law of physics wanting to fall over due to the high backs on them. Wanted to come up with a shallow swimming 'shad' style lure. The bottom lure has the slightly rounder profile but fairly high back while the top one is even higher. Both have radical side to side body action and an excellent aggressive action for bass or saltwater species. Tyenna Dave saw these being made and christened the top lure 'Shadonitself' and it is in his Tassie frog pattern.

This one is shaped from a big hunk of cedar and was actually shaped up last Oct before I went to Tassie but wasn't finished in time. Its called the 'Green Machine' and it digs down deep with a big action and looks good in the water. Hopefully it will be attched to a big 'searunner trout' next trip south. Screw eye hardware, Lexan bib, pinned and ballasted with two belly weights.

Now this guy is a bit radical I suppose and big - it was shaped from a big block of salvaged, stained Huon pine and is not finished yet as it needs a couple more coats of clears. Probably the most different thing about this is that I decided to go with a single tow point on the bib (still need to glue in with super strength Araldite) which was hand cut to fit the shape of the lure - it took me 3 attempts but the action is big and deep and straight. Just like the grain in the timber which is erratic - doesn't show up too good in the photo. Bib is pinned with screw and I suppoe this lure is intended for Murray Cod or similar big predators as it is about 150mm including bib

Hope you like

lure making lure carving

Hours of carving

Postby diemai » Wed Aug 17, 2011 4:27 pm

G'day , folks ,

Just got done with this approx. 14cms abachiwood blank , .......I've been carving on it for a couple of hours at work last week , .....only bib slot , belly slot and eye sockets were made with power tools , ....all the general shape done with carving knife , sandpaper and elbow grease lol !

The eyes consist of plastic beads , that I've stuck onto a piece of rigid wire to grind away the inner half of that bead to snugly sit in the countersunk socket(will be glued in after painting but prior to topcoating) .

Sadly one socket came off course a bit , so the eyes are not quite symetrical , ....but it's still OK .

The bib consists of 3mm thick lexan .

This morning before lateshift I'm gonna bend the three-hook wire form , after the blank would soak in a 50/50 solution of turpentine and boiled linseed oil for a few days to render the abachiwood waterproof , ..........a time consuming process , as the drying afterwards takes at least two weeks , most likely longer .

We do not have such giant grubs over here , so this lure does not resemble a natural prey of local pike , ....but I just thought , I might do another "out of the box"-lure for our pressured waters , ..............already working on a similar second lure , a monster larva this time , but still way smaller than this one , ...........great fun carving thumbsupsmilie !

........the missus said , that it is looking kinda scary , LOL !

Tasmania today

Well it has been a very pleasent christmas week in Burnie tasmania the weather gods have been good to us and allowed a lot of fishing to be done.
Salmon are all about and finally were seeing the big fellas show up with them just look for the birds and get amongst them.Trout after the rains have been quiet but now have started back up again the nights have been favourable for fishing not too cold either so its full throttle.
squid are still around also calamari and torpedo ,cuda, kingies and gummies are all on the prowl quite a few off the breakwater wall if you can get to it,or Doc rocks but be careful with your hike.
Well i trust the info is helpful for those local best baits are as always squid heads, pilchards, salmon fillets and blue striped metal slices for the salmon.
Have fun......

Tasmania

Well still down in sunny Tasmania the weather the last week has been a beauty and im loving the countryside.Havent been out much so no fishing to report still getting used to the rivers and streams more watching and observing than fishing of late plus due to my heart attack and op im taking it easy for now.
The searunners are a go the whitebait are small but begining to show up not in huge quantitys up North but they are sure to be here as we warm up even more.
The Blackback [salmon]as i call them are steady here at the moment good catches from the old reliable spots we managed a full boat quoter of fresh fillets the other week cooked just hours after catching [the only way]

Stay tuned for some snapshots of the fish and scenery as i get the chance to travel a bit and soak it up and again thanks for reading my blog
